Miroslav Koubek appointed Czech Republic head coach at 74

The Czech Football Association has confirmed the appointment of Miroslav Koubek as the new head coach of the national team. At 74 years old, Koubek will be tasked with guiding the Czech Republic through the World Cup play offs in March as they chase qualification for the 2026 tournament.

Koubek has been without a club since stepping down from Viktoria Plzen in September and now steps into the role following the dismissal of Ivan Hasek. Hasek was relieved of his duties during the qualification campaign after a shock 2–1 defeat to the Faroe Islands.

The veteran coach has agreed to a two and a half year contract, with his immediate focus on ending the country’s long wait for a return to the World Cup. The Czech Republic have not appeared at the finals since 2006.

In the European play offs, the Czechs will take on Ireland in the first round. Victory in that tie would set up a decisive clash against either Denmark or North Macedonia, with a place at the 2026 World Cup at stake.

Should they secure qualification for the tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the Czech Republic already know their group stage opponents. They have been placed in Group A alongside hosts Mexico, as well as South Africa and South Korea.
