John McGinn signs new Aston Villa contract running until 2028

Aston Villa captain John McGinn has committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new contract that will keep him at Villa Park until 2028.

The Scottish international, who joined Villa from Hibernian in 2018 for just £2.5 million, has become one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders and a driving force under Unai Emery. McGinn’s influence both on and off the pitch has been key to Villa’s transformation from a Championship side to genuine European contenders.

After fending off interest from several clubs during the summer, Villa moved quickly to reward their skipper with an improved deal, confirming his status as one of the cornerstones of Emery’s project. The club announced the extension on Tuesday, describing McGinn as a “stalwart in the Villa lineup” and “an integral part of the club’s journey from the Championship to the Champions League.”

Since joining seven years ago, McGinn has made over 300 appearances and scored a series of crucial goals, endearing himself to supporters with his tireless work rate and leadership. Only 35 players in the club’s history have reached that milestone, placing him firmly among Villa’s modern greats.

The 31-year-old has also been a consistent performer on the international stage, earning more than 80 caps for Scotland and sitting fifth on his country’s all-time goalscoring list. With the national team pushing for a place at next year’s World Cup, McGinn is set to play a key role in their qualification hopes while leading Villa in another promising domestic and European campaign.

His new deal marks another sign of stability and ambition at Villa Park as the club continues to build under Emery’s leadership.
