Arteta says Arsenal future depends on earning success on the pitch

Mikel Arteta has hinted that he could extend his stay at Arsenal beyond the end of his current contract in 2027, but insists any decision will depend on proving himself through results and trophies.

The Spaniard, who marks six years in charge of the North London club this weekend, guided Arsenal to FA Cup success in 2020. However, he has yet to win the Premier League, with his side finishing second in each of the last three seasons.

Arsenal are currently two points clear in the league this campaign and have also reached the quarter finals of the League Cup, but Arteta believes his position must always be justified by continued progress.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Arteta said he could imagine extending his contract, but stressed that it is not something to take for granted. He explained that football managers must constantly earn the right to remain in their roles and that the coming months will be crucial.

He added that the lack of major trophies in recent seasons is not due to poor performances from his team. According to Arteta, Arsenal have broken several club records during his tenure, yet still fallen short when it comes to silverware.

The Arsenal boss said this highlights the exceptionally high level of competition in the Premier League, describing it as something the league has never experienced before.

Arsenal will look to maintain their strong league position when they travel to face Everton later on Saturday.
