Daniele De Rossi Appointed as Genoa Manager After Patrick Vieira’s Sacking

Genoa have officially confirmed the appointment of Daniele De Rossi as their new head coach following the dismissal of Patrick Vieira. The Serie A club made the announcement on Thursday, hoping the former Roma legend can help steer them clear of relegation danger.

Vieira’s exit came after a miserable start to the season, with Genoa failing to win any of their first nine league matches, recording just three draws and six defeats. The poor run left the team anchored at the bottom of the Serie A table and prompted the club to act swiftly.

Club legend Domenico Criscito took interim charge at the weekend, overseeing a morale-boosting 2-1 victory away at Sassuolo, Genoa’s first win of the season which lifted them to 18th place, level on points with 17th-placed Pisa.

Genoa CFC announces that Daniele De Rossi has been appointed head coach of the first team,” read an official club statement. “The new coach has already met with the players and will lead the afternoon training session scheduled at the Signorini Sports Centre.

The 42-year-old De Rossi, who spent nearly 20 years at AS Roma and is regarded as one of the club’s greatest players, moves to Liguria seeking redemption after a turbulent spell as Roma manager. He was appointed in January 2024 following José Mourinho’s dismissal and initially enjoyed success guiding Roma to a sixth-place Serie A finish and a Europa League semi-final.

However, a poor start to the new campaign saw him dismissed last September, with his final match ironically ending in a 1-1 draw against Genoa.

De Rossi now faces an immediate test with Genoa’s next fixture coming at home against Fiorentina, another side in crisis after sacking Stefano Pioli earlier this week following their own winless start to the season.
