Kobbie Mainoo pushing for January exit as game time dries up at Manchester United

Kobbie Mainoo is expected to continue pressing for a January loan move as the young midfielder grows increasingly frustrated with his lack of minutes at Manchester United.

Despite hopes that his opportunities would improve as the season unfolded, Mainoo has slipped further down the pecking order, and those close to the situation believe he is now prepared to push harder for a temporary departure. United, however, want him to stay, fight for his place, and prove he deserves a more prominent role.

The club’s stance complicates matters. United have long questioned the value of “dry” loan deals without purchase clauses, arguing they rarely produce long-term benefits. But with Mainoo’s frustration rising and outside interest mounting, that policy is under pressure.

Mainoo’s uncertainty comes at a time when United must also make a decision on Joshua Zirkzee. Roma are preparing a loan proposal with an option to buy, and believe that structure might tempt United. A move for Conor Gallagher is also being considered if United decide to reinforce midfield, and any Zirkzee exit could prompt the club to bring in a forward with top-level experience to safeguard squad depth.

United’s recruitment strategy prioritising players who can contribute long-term is being stretched by growing interest from clubs sensing opportunities in Manchester’s unsettled squad.

Chelsea have resurfaced as potential suitors for Mainoo. The London club have monitored him previously and recently agreed a deal with United for Alejandro Garnacho during the summer window. Whether Mainoo would play significantly more at Stamford Bridge is debatable given their crowded midfield, but Chelsea remain concerned about Romeo Lavia’s recurring injuries and are assessing cover options.

Napoli are another side keeping a close eye on the situation, although United are expected to act primarily in their own interests before approving any move.

United are already planning for a future beyond Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes, with the club targeting two new long-term midfielders. There appears to be dwindling belief that Mainoo or Manuel Ugarte can eventually take over those roles.

As previously reported, Carlos Baleba remains financially out of reach due to Brighton’s valuation, despite his dip in form. Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton are among the most viable Premier League options still under consideration.
