Wolves Sacked Vitor Pereira After Nightmare Start to Season
Wolverhampton Wanderers have sacked Vítor Pereira after a run of results that left the club bottom of the Premier League and without a league victory in ten matches. The club confirmed the decision on Sunday following a 3 0 defeat at Fulham that extended a winless sequence which produced just two points from their opening ten games.
The dismissal brings to an end an 11 month spell in charge for Pereira who had been credited with steering Wolves to safety last season. Supporters and board members had hoped the early optimism would continue but form and performances fell away sharply this term, exposing defensive frailties and a lack of cutting edge in attack. The result at Craven Cottage crystallised growing discontent among the fan base and within the club.
The decision is striking because Pereira had only recently agreed a new long term contract with the club. That extension, signed weeks earlier, underlines how quickly confidence can evaporate in modern football when results do not follow. Wolves described results and performances as having dropped below acceptable standards and said a change in leadership was necessary.
All eight members of Pereira’s backroom team have left the club and academy coaches have been placed in temporary charge while a permanent replacement is sought. Under 21 coach James Collins and under 18 coach Richard Walker will oversee first team preparations as the club begins what it called an immediate search for a new head coach.
